Over the years the Industrialists’ Ball developed into a kind of ‘Court Ball for the bourgeoisie’. In 1898, the fiftieth anniversary of Franz Joseph’s accession to the throne, it was a particularly festive occasion, especially as it had been announced that the emperor would appear in person. When he arrived punctually at nine o’clock, Eduard Strauss, who was responsible for the music for the ball, immediately had his orchestra strike up national anthem. The waltz which he had composed specially for the occasion fitted in with the general mood of patriotic rejoicing. This was the Jubilee Waltz, op. 296, dedicated to the committee of the Industrialists’ Ball, and its introduction cites the march by Ferdinand Preis based on Franz von Suppé’s patriotic song, ‘O du mein Österreich’ (O Thou, my Austria’).
