Hans Christian Lumbye
Champagne Galop
op. 14
The Champagne Galop (Danish: Champagnegaloppen) is a composition for orchestra by the Danish composer Hans Christian Lumbye (1810–1874). The Champagne Galop was composed for the second anniversary of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen on August 15, 1845. Torrential rain prevented Lumbye - who was also Tivoli's resident conductor - from performing the work until the following week on 22nd of August. Along with Lumbyes Telegraph Galop and Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop, it was included in the Danish Cultural Canon in 2006 as a masterpiece of Danish classical music.
Lumbye's grandson had a story to tell about the creation of the play: "One evening Lumbye was invited to an official celebration at the British Embassy in Copenhagen, but passing his usual place on the way, he decided to spend the evening there in more intimate company. Arriving back at the family home late in the evening, he had to explain that the embassy, which he had never actually visited, was indulging in champagne and revelry. To enlighten his curious family, he sat down at the piano and improvised a piece that later became known as the world-famous Champagne Gallop.
